Walter Steps Up To The Plate

Walter Steps Up To The Plate was set in 1927. Twelve-year-old Walter leaves his father, his friends, and his beloved Chicago Cubs baseball team when his mother is diagnosed with tuberculosis. Walter and his mother travel on the Santa Fe Chief to Albuquerque to stay with relatives he has never met. To help with expenses, Walter gets a paper route, but when he wrecks his cousin’s bicycle, their relationship deteriorates. In spite of Walter’s efforts to help his mother, her condition worsens, and she is admitted to a sanatorium. Walter has a chance encounter with Al Capone who arranges to pay for her expensive treatment. Should Walter take the risk of being indebted to a gangster?
